Iron chelator tablet for iron overload in thalassaemia when other chelation is not enough.

Clinical information

Common uses

transfusional iron overload in thalassaemia syndromes

Common side effects

feeling sick
vomiting
stomach pain
joint pain
raised liver enzymes

Cautions

can cause a dangerous drop in white blood cells — risk of fatal infection
regular blood count monitoring is essential
report any signs of infection immediately
liver enzymes and zinc levels need monitoring

Interactions

other drugs that lower white blood cells — avoid
UGT1A6 inhibitor drugs — avoid
iron, aluminium or zinc supplements — take 4 hours apart

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm an unborn baby
