Dapagliflozin

Clinical information

Common uses

  • type 2 diabetes
  • heart failure
  • chronic kidney disease

Common side effects

  • thrush (fungal infections)
  • back pain
  • peeing more than usual
  • low blood sugar (dizziness, faintness)

Cautions

  • dehydration risk if vomiting, diarrhoea or fever
  • do not stop suddenly — blood sugar may rise
  • rare diabetic ketoacidosis and severe urine infections
  • not for type 1 diabetes

Interactions

  • furosemide and other fluid-removing medicines
  • some other diabetes medicines, such as gliclazide
  • blood-pressure-lowering medicines
  • lithium
