Danazol

A hormonal medicine with androgen-like effects, used for conditions like hereditary angioedema.

Clinical information

Common uses

hereditary angioedema (long-term protection)

Common side effects

weight gain, acne and oily skin
unwanted hair growth and voice changes
menstrual disturbances or missed periods
flushing, sweating and vaginal dryness

Cautions

never use in pregnancy — can masculinise a female baby
blood clots and life-threatening strokes reported
liver damage, including tumours, with long-term use
raised pressure in the skull (pseudotumor cerebri)

Interactions

warfarin (bleeding time prolonged)
carbamazepine (levels rise)
diabetes medicines (insulin resistance)
ciclosporin and tacrolimus (more kidney toxicity)
statins such as simvastatin (muscle damage risk)
synthetic vitamin D analogues (high calcium)

Pregnancy: contraindicated — do not use
