Dalteparin Sodium

A low molecular weight heparin injection that prevents and treats blood clots.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing DVT after surgery or during immobility
  • preventing clot complications in unstable angina/heart attack
  • extended clot treatment in cancer patients
  • treating clots in children

Common side effects

  • bleeding
  • low platelet counts (type I)
  • bruising or hematoma at the injection site
  • injection site pain
  • temporary rise in liver enzymes

Cautions

  • spinal or epidural procedures risk paralysing hematoma (boxed warning)
  • not with active major bleeding
  • not after heparin-induced low platelets
  • regular blood counts recommended

Interactions

  • oral anticoagulants (bleeding risk)
  • platelet inhibitors (bleeding risk)
  • thrombolytic clot-busting drugs (bleeding risk)

Pregnancy: use only if clearly needed — prefer preservative-free formulations
