Dalteparin Sodium

A low molecular weight heparin injection that prevents and treats blood clots.

Clinical information

Common uses

preventing DVT after surgery or during immobility
preventing clot complications in unstable angina/heart attack
extended clot treatment in cancer patients
treating clots in children

Common side effects

bleeding
low platelet counts (type I)
bruising or hematoma at the injection site
injection site pain
temporary rise in liver enzymes

Cautions

spinal or epidural procedures risk paralysing hematoma (boxed warning)
not with active major bleeding
not after heparin-induced low platelets
regular blood counts recommended

Interactions

oral anticoagulants (bleeding risk)
platelet inhibitors (bleeding risk)
thrombolytic clot-busting drugs (bleeding risk)

Pregnancy: use only if clearly needed — prefer preservative-free formulations
