Dabigatran

An anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents and treats blood clots.

Clinical information

Common uses

stroke prevention in non-valvular atrial fibrillation
treating DVT and pulmonary embolism
preventing clots after hip replacement
treating clots in children 8-18

Common side effects

stomach upset and indigestion-type symptoms
bleeding

Cautions

do not stop early — clot risk rises (boxed warning)
spinal or epidural procedures risk serious hematoma
can cause serious, sometimes fatal bleeding
not with mechanical heart valves

Interactions

P-gp inducers — avoid
P-gp inhibitors with reduced kidney function — reduce or avoid
NSAIDs, platelet inhibitors and other anticoagulants (bleeding risk)

Pregnancy: limited data — bleeding risk for mother and baby
