Cyproheptadine

An antihistamine for allergies, itching and hives.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis
  • hives and swelling (urticaria, angioedema)
  • cold urticaria and dermatographism
  • add-on for allergic reactions after emergency treatment

Common side effects

  • sedation and sleepiness
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • increased appetite and weight gain

Cautions

  • not for newborns or breastfeeding mothers
  • avoid with glaucoma, stomach ulcer or prostate problems
  • may reduce alertness — care when driving
  • overdose in children can be dangerous

Interactions

  • MAO inhibitors (contraindicated)
  • alcohol and other sedatives (added drowsiness)
