Cyclopentolate

Eye drops that dilate the pupil and relax focusing for eye examinations.

Clinical information

Common uses

dilating the pupil (mydriasis)
relaxing eye focusing (cycloplegia)

Common side effects

burning and irritation
blurred vision
sensitivity to light
raised eye pressure
eye redness or conjunctivitis

Cautions

infants at special risk — observe closely for 30 minutes
can cause behavioural disturbances, especially in children
may temporarily raise eye pressure

Interactions

carbachol, pilocarpine or cholinesterase-inhibitor eye drops (reduced effect)

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
