Conjugated estrogen

An estrogen hormone tablet used to treat menopause symptoms and prevent osteoporosis.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • moderate to severe hot flushes due to menopause
  • vaginal dryness and atrophy due to menopause
  • low estrogen from hypogonadism or ovarian failure
  • prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis

Common side effects

  • stomach pain, back pain or headache
  • feeling sick and wind
  • breast pain
  • vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • trouble sleeping or low mood

Cautions

  • raises womb-cancer risk if used without a progestogen (boxed warning)
  • increased risk of stroke and blood clots; breast cancer with progestin (boxed warning)
  • not for preventing heart disease or dementia
  • use the lowest dose for the shortest time

Interactions

  • CYP3A4 inducers or inhibitors — may change estrogen levels
