Colistin

Colistin (given as colistimethate injection) is an antibiotic for serious infections caused by certain gram-negative bacteria.

Clinical information

Common uses

serious gram-negative infections, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Common side effects

tingling of the hands, feet or tongue
dizziness and vertigo
slurred speech
itching, rash and hives
stomach upset

Cautions

can harm the kidneys — reversible after stopping
do not drive or use machinery during treatment
breathing can stop (apnoea), especially with kidney impairment
electrolyte disturbances may need monitoring

Interactions

aminoglycoside antibiotics and polymyxin (nerve-muscle blockade)
muscle relaxants such as tubocurarine or succinylcholine
sodium cephalothin (kidney toxicity)

Pregnancy: crosses the placenta; only if benefit justifies risk
