Colistimethate Sodium

An injected antibiotic for serious infections by certain gram-negative bacteria.

Clinical information

Common uses

serious gram-negative infections, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Common side effects

stomach upset
tingling of hands, feet or tongue
dizziness or vertigo
slurred speech
itching or rash

Cautions

can harm the kidneys — dose-related, reversible on stopping
nerve symptoms — do not drive or use machinery
do not exceed the maximum daily dose

Interactions

aminoglycoside and polymyxin antibiotics (nerve-muscle effects)
surgical muscle relaxants (e.g. tubocurarine, succinylcholine)
sodium cephalothin (kidney damage risk — avoid)
