Codeine

An opioid painkiller for pain, and sometimes cough or diarrhoea.

Clinical information

Common uses

pain after an operation or injury
dry or painful cough
diarrhoea

Common side effects

constipation
feeling or being sick
feeling sleepy or tired
sweating

Cautions

can be addictive — do not stop suddenly after long use
taking an extra dose can be dangerous
may not suit asthma, lung problems or head injury
not for children under 12

Interactions

other opioid painkillers such as co-codamol
medicines for depression or mental health conditions
sedating antihistamines
anti-sickness medicines
other diarrhoea medicines
alcohol and recreational drugs (serious side effects)
