Clotrimazole

An antifungal medicine for thrush, athlete's foot and other fungal infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • thrush of the vagina, penis or skin
  • athlete's foot and ringworm
  • fungal ear infections
  • nappy rash and skin-fold rash (intertrigo)

Common side effects

  • red, itchy or irritated skin
  • pain, burning or stinging
  • vaginal pain, swelling, discharge or bleeding (internal products)

Cautions

  • damages latex condoms and diaphragms for at least 5 days
  • thrush treatment may not suit under-16s or over-60s
  • see a doctor if not better after 7 days

Interactions

  • tacrolimus (with internal cream or pessaries)
  • Solfradex ear drops (with ear solution)

Pregnancy: usually fine — check with a pharmacist or doctor first
