Clopidogrel

An antiplatelet medicine that prevents dangerous blood clots.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing clots after heart attack or unstable angina
  • preventing further strokes or mini-strokes
  • peripheral arterial disease
  • after coronary stent insertion

Common side effects

  • bleeding more easily (nosebleeds, bruising, heavier periods)
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach pain
  • indigestion or heartburn

Cautions

  • do not stop without talking to your doctor
  • tell your doctor about stomach ulcers or bleeding disorders
  • may need stopping before surgery or dental work
  • avoid grapefruit juice — makes it work less well

Interactions

  • other blood thinners (aspirin, warfarin, rivaroxaban, ticagrelor)
  • NSAIDs such as ibuprofen
  • SSRIs such as citalopram
  • omeprazole or esomeprazole (heartburn medicines)
  • St John's wort
  • epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine

Pregnancy: not often recommended, but can be taken if needed
