Clonidine

A vasodilator medicine for preventing migraines, menopausal hot flushes and high blood pressure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing migraines and similar headaches
  • menopausal hot flushes and sweats
  • high blood pressure

Common side effects

  • feeling sleepy, tired and weak
  • dizziness or faintness on standing
  • dry mouth
  • constipation
  • headaches

Cautions

  • do not stop suddenly — blood pressure can rise dangerously
  • tell your doctor about heart, kidney or circulation problems
  • mention any history of depression
  • do not drive if sleepy or dizzy

Interactions

  • beta blockers and other heart or blood pressure medicines
  • antidepressants or antipsychotics
  • NSAIDs such as ibuprofen
  • muscle relaxants (baclofen, tizanidine)
  • sleeping tablets and sedatives
  • methylphenidate (ADHD)
