Clonazepam

A benzodiazepine for epileptic seizures, muscle spasms and panic disorder.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • epileptic seizures
  • involuntary muscle spasms
  • panic disorder
  • restless legs syndrome

Common side effects

  • daytime sleepiness
  • disturbed sleep and vivid dreams
  • feeling light-headed, unsteady or dizzy
  • muscle weakness

Cautions

  • can be addictive if taken beyond 2 to 4 weeks
  • do not stop suddenly — withdrawal effects
  • do not drink alcohol — dangerously deep sleep
  • tell your doctor about breathing, liver or kidney problems

Interactions

  • strong painkillers (codeine, morphine, methadone)
  • antidepressants and antipsychotics
  • sedating antihistamines (chlorphenamine, promethazine)
  • other epilepsy medicines
  • rifampicin and antifungals like fluconazole
  • valerian or passionflower herbal remedies

Pregnancy: can be taken if needed, especially for epilepsy — baby monitored
