Clomipramine

Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Clinical information

Common uses

obsessions and compulsions in OCD

Common side effects

dry mouth and constipation
nausea and indigestion
sleepiness, dizziness and tremor
sexual side effects
sweating, tiredness and weight gain

Cautions

boxed warning: increased suicidal thinking in children, teens and young adults
never with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of them
not soon after a heart attack
caution with other medicines acting on the brain

Interactions

MAO inhibitors (contraindicated)
linezolid or IV methylene blue (serotonin syndrome)
cimetidine and fluoxetine (raise its levels)
barbiturates and phenytoin (lower its levels)
haloperidol (raises its levels)
clonidine and guanethidine (their effect is blocked)

Pregnancy: only if benefit justifies risk; newborn withdrawal symptoms reported
