Clobetasol

A very strong steroid used on the skin for swelling and itching.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • eczema, including contact dermatitis
  • psoriasis
  • lichen planus
  • discoid lupus

Common side effects

  • burning or stinging for a few minutes after applying

Cautions

  • do not use on the face unless a doctor says so
  • do not use for more than 4 weeks without advice
  • long-term use can thin skin and cause withdrawal reactions
  • can worsen or spread skin infections

Interactions

  • ritonavir (HIV medicine)
  • itraconazole (antifungal)

Pregnancy: can be used — very little reaches the baby
