Clarithromycin

An antibiotic used to treat chest, skin and ear infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • chest infections such as pneumonia
  • skin infections such as cellulitis
  • ear infections
  • Helicobacter pylori (stomach ulcer bacteria)

Common side effects

  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • bloating and indigestion
  • headaches
  • difficulty sleeping

Cautions

  • finish the full course, even if you feel better
  • tell your doctor about heart rhythm problems
  • can make myasthenia gravis worse
  • tell your doctor about liver or kidney problems

Interactions

  • epilepsy medicines (carbamazepine, phenytoin)
  • theophylline (asthma)
  • colchicine (gout)
  • warfarin or ticagrelor (blood thinners)
  • statins such as simvastatin or atorvastatin
  • St John's wort

Pregnancy: can be taken, but other antibiotics may be more suitable
