Clinical information

Common uses

skin, bone and joint infections
urinary infections and bacterial prostatitis
infectious diarrhoea and typhoid fever
inhalational anthrax and plague

Common side effects

nausea
diarrhoea
abnormal liver test results
vomiting
rash

Cautions

tendon rupture, nerve damage and CNS effects (boxed warning)
can worsen myasthenia gravis — avoid (boxed warning)
reserved for some infections when no alternatives exist
heart rhythm (QT) prolongation possible

Interactions

tizanidine — never together (contraindicated)
theophylline — serious, sometimes fatal reactions; avoid
warfarin (blood thinner) — bleeding risk, monitor INR
diabetes medicines — severe low blood sugar reported
antacids, iron, zinc, calcium and dairy — take hours apart
QT-prolonging medicines — avoid
