Ciprofloxacin

A fluoroquinolone antibiotic for serious infections when other antibiotics aren't suitable.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • urinary tract and chest infections
  • skin, bone, eye and ear infections
  • sexually transmitted infections
  • preventing meningitis after close contact

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • diarrhoea
  • eye drops: brief stinging or a bad taste

Cautions

  • reserved for when nothing else suits — serious side-effect risk
  • stop and get help for tendon, nerve or mood problems
  • avoid dairy or added-calcium products within 2 hours of doses
  • check first if you have heart, aorta or seizure problems

Interactions

  • antacids — take ciprofloxacin 2 hours before or 4 after
  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • theophylline or aminophylline (asthma medicines)
  • tizanidine (muscle stiffness medicine)
  • methotrexate, phenytoin and steroids
  • iron, calcium and zinc supplements (leave a 2-hour gap)

Pregnancy: tablets not generally recommended; ear and eye drops are OK
