Choriogonadotropin Alpha

A hormone (hCG) injection used in fertility treatment and certain male conditions.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • triggering ovulation in fertility treatment
  • undescended testicles in boys (cryptorchidism)
  • male hypogonadism from pituitary deficiency

Common side effects

  • injection site pain, bruising, redness or swelling
  • headache
  • irritability, restlessness or low mood
  • tiredness or fluid retention

Cautions

  • not effective for weight loss (label warning)
  • ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can be serious, even life-threatening
  • blood clots reported with gonadotropin treatment
  • multiple pregnancies are more likely
