Cholestyramine

A powder that binds bile acids to lower cholesterol and relieve itching.

Clinical information

Common uses

lowering LDL cholesterol alongside diet
itching from partial biliary obstruction

Common side effects

constipation (most common)
stomach discomfort or wind
nausea or vomiting
heartburn or belching

Cautions

not for complete biliary obstruction
can block absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K
take other medicines 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after

Interactions

warfarin (blood thinner)
thyroid hormone medicines
digitalis heart medicines
thiazide diuretics and propranolol
tetracycline and penicillin G antibiotics
estrogens and progestins

Pregnancy: not absorbed, but can reduce vitamin absorption — weigh benefits and risks
