Cholera Vaccine

A live oral vaccine against cholera for travellers aged 2 to 64.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing cholera (Vibrio cholerae O1) when travelling to affected areas

Common side effects

  • tiredness
  • headache
  • stomach pain
  • nausea or vomiting
  • loss of appetite

Cautions

  • not after a severe allergic reaction to any cholera vaccine
  • safety not established in people with weak immune systems
  • vaccine strain sheds in stool — caution near immunocompromised contacts

Interactions

  • antibiotics in the last 14 days can inactivate the vaccine
  • chloroquine — take the vaccine at least 10 days before

Pregnancy: not absorbed into the body — fetal exposure not expected
