Chlorpromazine

An antipsychotic for schizophrenia, severe nausea, hiccups and related conditions.

Clinical information

Common uses

schizophrenia and psychotic disorders
nausea and vomiting
mania; intractable hiccups
restlessness before surgery; tetanus (as an adjunct)

Common side effects

drowsiness, especially in the first weeks
dizziness or fainting on standing (low blood pressure)
dry mouth, constipation or blocked nose

Cautions

raises death risk in elderly people with dementia (boxed warning)
can cause tardive dyskinesia — persistent involuntary movements
neuroleptic malignant syndrome: rare but potentially fatal
avoid alcohol; can impair driving and cause falls

Interactions

alcohol and other sedatives — additive drowsiness and low blood pressure
guanethidine (blood pressure medicine) — effect counteracted
lithium — rare brain toxicity when combined

Pregnancy: only if essential — newborns may have withdrawal or movement effects
