Chlorpheniramine

Chlorphenamine (chlorpheniramine) is a drowsy antihistamine that relieves allergy symptoms.

Clinical information

Common uses

hay fever and allergies
red itchy eyes (conjunctivitis)
eczema and hives
insect bites and stings

Common side effects

feeling sleepy during the daytime
feeling sick (nausea)
feeling dizzy or difficulty concentrating
dry mouth
headaches or blurred vision

Cautions

do not drive or use tools if sleepy, dizzy or vision is blurred
avoid alcohol — it makes sleepiness worse
not for children under 6 in cough or cold medicines
check first if you have glaucoma, epilepsy, prostate or urinary problems

Interactions

MAO inhibitor antidepressants such as phenelzine
phenytoin (epilepsy medicine)
anxiety medicines and sleeping tablets
codeine-containing painkillers
other medicines that make you drowsy
alcohol

Pregnancy: can be taken in pregnancy; a non-drowsy antihistamine may be preferred
