Chloroquine

A tablet for treating and preventing malaria, and for extraintestinal amebiasis.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • treating uncomplicated malaria
  • malaria prevention where chloroquine resistance is absent
  • extraintestinal amebiasis

Cautions

  • can cause serious, sometimes fatal heart rhythm problems
  • long-term or high-dose use can permanently damage the retina
  • can cause severe low blood sugar
  • keep away from children — small overdoses can be fatal

Interactions

  • QT-prolonging medicines (heart rhythm risk)
  • tamoxifen (higher risk of retinal damage)
  • diabetes medicines (low blood sugar)

Pregnancy: no increase in birth defects seen at recommended doses
