A tablet for treating and preventing malaria, and for extraintestinal amebiasis.

Clinical information

Common uses

treating uncomplicated malaria
malaria prevention where chloroquine resistance is absent
extraintestinal amebiasis

Cautions

can cause serious, sometimes fatal heart rhythm problems
long-term or high-dose use can permanently damage the retina
can cause severe low blood sugar
keep away from children — small overdoses can be fatal

Interactions

QT-prolonging medicines (heart rhythm risk)
tamoxifen (higher risk of retinal damage)
diabetes medicines (low blood sugar)

Pregnancy: no increase in birth defects seen at recommended doses
