Chlorhexidine

Clinical information

Common uses

  • mouth infections, ulcers and gum disease
  • sore throats
  • skin infections and pre-surgery skin cleaning
  • denture care

Common side effects

  • dry mouth
  • brief burning, tingling or strange taste
  • temporary tongue colour change
  • stained teeth

Cautions

  • short-term use only
  • stop if your mouth becomes sore or skin peels
  • wait 30 minutes after mouth treatments before eating or drinking
  • keep away from eyes and ears

Interactions

  • not known to cause problems with other medicines
  • toothpaste can stop it working — use at different times

Pregnancy: generally OK to use in pregnancy
