Chloramphenicol

An antibiotic mainly used as drops or ointment for eye and ear infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • eye infections such as conjunctivitis
  • ear infections
  • serious infections by injection or capsules (hospital use)

Common side effects

  • stinging or burning in the eye
  • blurred vision for a short time
  • mild stinging or irritation in the ear

Cautions

  • do not wear contact lenses during eye treatment
  • tell your doctor about any family history of blood disorders
  • rarely linked to aplastic anaemia, mainly with injections
  • eye treatment: no more than 5 days unless advised

Interactions

  • cancer medicines such as cyclophosphamide
  • immune-system medicines such as azathioprine or methotrexate

Pregnancy: eye and ear treatments can be used in pregnancy
