Cetirizine

A non-drowsy antihistamine for hay fever and other allergy symptoms.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • hay fever and conjunctivitis
  • eczema and hives
  • insect bite and sting reactions
  • some food allergies

Common side effects

  • feeling sleepy or tired
  • headaches
  • dry mouth
  • feeling sick or dizzy
  • diarrhoea

Cautions

  • can still make you sleepy — do not drive if affected
  • check first if you have kidney failure or epilepsy
  • may need stopping a few days before allergy tests
  • best not to drink alcohol while taking it

Interactions

  • medicines causing drowsiness, dry mouth or difficulty peeing

Pregnancy: can be taken in pregnancy
