Cephalexin

An oral cephalosporin antibiotic for common bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • respiratory tract infections
  • middle ear infections
  • skin and bone infections
  • urinary and genital infections

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • feeling sick or being sick
  • indigestion
  • stomach pain

Cautions

  • not for people allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics
  • diarrhoea can signal C. difficile infection
  • lower dose needed with kidney problems (seizure risk)

Interactions

  • metformin (diabetes medicine) — low blood sugar risk
  • probenecid — not recommended together
  • can cause false-positive urine glucose tests
