Celecoxib

An anti-inflammatory (NSAID) for arthritis pain and period pain.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • ankylosing spondylitis
  • short-term (acute) pain
  • period pain

Common side effects

  • stomach pain, wind, indigestion or diarrhoea
  • swollen ankles or legs
  • dizziness
  • cold-like symptoms (sore throat, sinusitis)
  • rash

Cautions

  • raises risk of heart attack and stroke (boxed warning)
  • can cause serious stomach bleeding and ulcers (boxed warning)
  • do not use around heart bypass (CABG) surgery
  • not for people allergic to aspirin, NSAIDs or sulfonamides

Interactions

  • warfarin and other blood thinners (bleeding risk)
  • aspirin (more stomach problems)
  • blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta blockers, diuretics)
  • lithium and methotrexate (toxicity can rise)
  • digoxin (levels rise — monitor)
  • fluconazole (raises celecoxib levels)

Pregnancy: avoid from 30 weeks; limit use from 20 weeks
