Cefuroxime

An oral cephalosporin antibiotic for a range of bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • throat, ear and sinus infections
  • flare-ups of chronic bronchitis
  • skin and urinary infections
  • gonorrhoea and early Lyme disease

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • nausea or vomiting
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (in Lyme disease)
  • vaginal thrush

Cautions

  • not for people allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics
  • diarrhoea can signal C. difficile infection

Interactions

  • antacids and acid-reducing medicines (less antibiotic absorbed)
  • probenecid (raises levels — not recommended)

Pregnancy: no drug-linked risk identified in decades of use
