Clinical information

Common uses

bacterial infections (cephalosporin antibiotic given by injection)

Cautions

not for people allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics
caution with penicillin allergy
rapid injection into a central line has caused dangerous heart rhythms
diarrhoea can signal C. difficile infection

Interactions

probenecid (raises cefotaxime levels — avoid high doses together)
aminoglycosides, NSAIDs and furosemide (added kidney strain)

Pregnancy: no harm in animal studies — use only if clearly needed
