Cefexime

Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic taken by mouth for a range of bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

urinary tract infections
throat and tonsil infections
flare-ups of chronic bronchitis
gonorrhoea

Common side effects

diarrhoea
nausea
loose stools
stomach pain and indigestion
vomiting

Cautions

avoid if allergic to cephalosporins; cross-allergy with penicillin possible
severe or lasting diarrhoea can signal C. difficile infection
dose adjusted in kidney impairment

Interactions

carbamazepine (levels may rise)
warfarin and anticoagulants (bleeding tendency may rise)
can cause false-positive urine glucose and ketone tests
