Cefepime

An injectable cephalosporin antibiotic for pneumonia and other serious infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

pneumonia
urinary tract infections including kidney infection
skin infections
fever with low white cells; complicated abdominal infections

Common side effects

injection site reactions
rash
diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting
headache and fever (at higher doses)

Cautions

not for people with immediate allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics
brain effects (confusion, seizures) possible, mainly with kidney impairment
diarrhoea can signal C. difficile infection

Interactions

aminoglycoside antibiotics (kidney and hearing damage risk)
strong diuretics such as furosemide (kidney risk)
