Cefazolin Sodium

An injectable cephalosporin antibiotic for a wide range of bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

respiratory, urinary, skin, bone and joint infections
blood infections (septicemia) and endocarditis
preventing infection around surgery

Common side effects

feeling sick or being sick
diarrhoea
allergic reactions such as rash or hives

Cautions

not for people allergic to cephalosporins, penicillins or other beta-lactams
diarrhoea can signal C. difficile infection
can lower prothrombin activity — clotting monitored in at-risk patients

Interactions

probenecid (gout medicine) — not recommended together

Pregnancy: decades of use have not shown a drug-linked risk
