Cefataxime

Injectable cephalosporin antibiotic.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • bacterial infections (given by injection)

Cautions

  • tell your doctor about cephalosporin or penicillin allergy
  • rapid injection into a central line can cause dangerous heart rhythms
  • antibiotic-associated C. difficile diarrhoea can occur

Interactions

  • probenecid (raises cefotaxime levels — high doses avoided)
  • aminoglycosides, NSAIDs, furosemide (added kidney strain)

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
