Cefaclor

A cephalosporin antibiotic for ear, chest, throat, urinary and skin infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • middle ear infections
  • chest infections including pneumonia
  • sore throat and tonsillitis
  • urinary tract and skin infections

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • skin rash or itching
  • genital itching or thrush

Cautions

  • do not take if allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics
  • penicillin allergy: up to 1 in 10 may also react
  • diarrhoea after antibiotics can signal C. difficile colitis
  • serum-sickness-like reactions reported, mostly in children

Interactions

  • warfarin (blood thinner) — rare bleeding-time increases reported

Pregnancy: no harm seen in animal studies — use only if clearly needed
