Caspofungin

An antifungal injection for serious Candida and Aspergillus infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

candidemia and other Candida infections
esophageal candidiasis
suspected fungal infection in febrile, low white cell patients
invasive aspergillosis when other treatments fail

Common side effects

diarrhoea
fever
raised liver enzymes
low blood potassium

Cautions

allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and serious skin reactions
can affect the liver — liver tests monitored
dose reduced in moderate liver impairment

Interactions

cyclosporine (raised liver enzymes)
tacrolimus (monitor blood levels)
rifampin (higher caspofungin dose needed)
phenytoin, carbamazepine or dexamethasone (may lower caspofungin levels)
efavirenz or nevirapine (may lower caspofungin levels)
