Carvedilol

A beta blocker for high blood pressure, heart failure and angina.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure
  • heart failure (with other medicines)
  • preventing angina chest pain
  • helping prevent heart disease, heart attacks and strokes

Common side effects

  • feeling sleepy, tired or dizzy
  • cold fingers or toes
  • feeling sick or being sick
  • diarrhoea

Cautions

  • do not stop taking it suddenly
  • may not suit people with asthma, lung disease or low blood pressure
  • do not drive if you feel tired or dizzy
  • alcohol can make dizziness worse

Interactions

  • other blood pressure-lowering medicines
  • heart rhythm medicines such as digoxin or amiodarone
  • diabetes medicines, especially insulin (low blood sugar)
  • NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen
  • cold and nasal congestion remedies
  • asthma or COPD medicines
