Carboprost

A hospital injection for second-trimester abortion and severe bleeding after childbirth.

Clinical information

Common uses

ending pregnancy between 13 and 20 weeks (specific situations)
postpartum haemorrhage not responding to other treatments

Common side effects

vomiting
diarrhoea
feeling sick
raised temperature
flushing or hot flashes

Cautions

hospital use only, by medically trained staff
not with active heart, lung, kidney or liver disease
not with acute pelvic inflammatory disease
contains benzyl alcohol — risk to premature infants

Interactions

other oxytocic (womb-contracting) drugs — do not combine

Pregnancy: used only to end pregnancy or treat bleeding after delivery
