Carboplatin

A platinum chemotherapy infusion, mainly for advanced ovarian cancer.

Clinical information

Common uses

initial treatment of advanced ovarian cancer (in combination)
recurrent ovarian cancer after previous chemotherapy

Common side effects

low blood counts (bone marrow suppression)
anaemia, which may need transfusions
feeling sick and vomiting

Cautions

bone marrow suppression is dose-limiting — blood counts monitored
allergic reactions can occur within minutes of infusion
hearing loss and nerve problems can occur
not with severe bone marrow depression or significant bleeding

Interactions

kidney-harming drugs — effects may be potentiated
aminoglycoside antibiotics — more kidney and hearing damage

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm the unborn baby
