Carbamazepin

An anticonvulsant (anti-seizure) medicine taken as extended-release tablets.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • epilepsy (seizure control)

Common side effects

  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • unsteadiness
  • feeling sick
  • vomiting

Cautions

  • serious skin reactions and blood disorders — boxed warning
  • can harm an unborn baby, including spina bifida
  • not with a history of bone marrow depression
  • do not stop suddenly — seizures may return

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants — stop at least 14 days before
  • nefazodone — must not be combined
  • tricyclic antidepressants — do not use if sensitive to them
  • do not mix the liquid with other liquid medicines

Pregnancy: can harm the baby — do not stop suddenly; specialist advice
