Captopril

An ACE inhibitor tablet for high blood pressure, heart failure and diabetic kidney disease.

Clinical information

Common uses

high blood pressure
heart failure
after heart attack with weakened heart
diabetic kidney disease (type 1 diabetes)

Common side effects

rash, often itchy
loss or change of taste
cough
dizziness from low blood pressure
protein in the urine

Cautions

stop as soon as pregnancy is detected — can harm the baby
swelling of face, lips or throat (angioedema) can be fatal
can lower white blood cells — report any infection or sore throat
very low blood pressure possible if dehydrated or on diuretics

Interactions

aliskiren — must not be combined in diabetes
sacubitril/valsartan — must not be combined (36-hour gap)
mTOR inhibitors (e.g. sirolimus) — higher angioedema risk
diuretics — risk of excessive blood pressure fall
allopurinol — linked with low white cells in kidney failure

Pregnancy: must not be used — discontinue as soon as pregnancy detected
