Canagliflozin

A type 2 diabetes tablet (SGLT2 inhibitor) that also protects heart and kidneys.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • type 2 diabetes (with diet and exercise)
  • reducing heart attack and stroke risk in type 2 diabetes
  • protecting kidneys in diabetic kidney disease

Common side effects

  • genital thrush, especially in women
  • urinary tract infections
  • peeing more often

Cautions

  • risk of diabetic ketoacidosis — seek help if unwell
  • increased risk of lower limb amputation — check feet
  • can cause dehydration and kidney injury
  • serious genital area infections (Fournier's gangrene) reported

Interactions

  • rifampicin, phenytoin, ritonavir (UGT inducers) — dose may need increasing
  • insulin and sulfonylureas — higher risk of low blood sugar
  • digoxin — levels increase, monitor
  • lithium — levels may fall, monitor

Pregnancy: not recommended in the second and third trimesters
