Calcium Gluconate

An injection used to treat acutely low blood calcium.

Clinical information

Common uses

acute symptomatic hypocalcaemia (low blood calcium)

Common side effects

irritation or tissue damage where injected
flushing and low blood pressure
slow or irregular heartbeat

Cautions

must be infused slowly — rapid injection can affect the heart
never given with ceftriaxone to newborns — fatal precipitates
leakage into surrounding tissue can damage skin
contains aluminium, which may be toxic

Interactions

digoxin and other cardiac glycosides — dangerous heart rhythms
calcium channel blockers — their effect may be reduced
vitamin D, vitamin A, thiazide diuretics, oestrogen — high calcium risk
