Calcium Acetate

A phosphate binder that lowers blood phosphorus in kidney failure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood phosphorus in end-stage kidney disease

Common side effects

  • high blood calcium
  • feeling sick
  • vomiting

Cautions

  • blood calcium can rise — dose may be reduced or stopped
  • high calcium can worsen digoxin toxicity
  • not for people with high blood calcium

Interactions

  • tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics — absorption reduced
  • other oral medicines — take 1 hour before or 3 hours after

Pregnancy: not expected to harm the baby if calcium is monitored
