Caffein Citrate

Caffeine citrate is a medicine for apnoea of prematurity — pauses in breathing in premature babies.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • treatment of apnoea of prematurity

Common side effects

  • irritability, restlessness and jitteriness
  • fast heart rate
  • feeding intolerance
  • changes in blood sugar (high or low)
  • rash

Cautions

  • babies are monitored for necrotising enterocolitis, a serious bowel condition
  • blood caffeine levels may be monitored to avoid toxicity
  • baseline caffeine level checked if the baby had theophylline or the mother caffeine

Interactions

  • cimetidine and ketoconazole (slow caffeine removal)
  • phenobarbital and phenytoin (speed caffeine removal)
  • theophylline (concurrent use not recommended)
  • ketoprofen

Pregnancy: not applicable — given to premature babies
