Cabergolin

A tablet that lowers prolactin, used to treat hyperprolactinaemia.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high prolactin levels (idiopathic or from pituitary adenomas)

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • headache
  • dizziness

Cautions

  • not with uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart valve disease
  • heart valve and tissue scarring — echocardiogram monitoring needed
  • can cause dizziness on standing (low blood pressure)
  • do not use to stop breast milk after birth

Interactions

  • dopamine-blocking drugs (e.g. metoclopramide, phenothiazines) — not recommended

Pregnancy: usually stopped if risks outweigh benefits — specialist advice
