Bupropion

An antidepressant tablet used to treat major depression.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • major depressive disorder

Common side effects

  • agitation
  • dry mouth
  • constipation
  • headache
  • feeling sick or being sick

Cautions

  • can increase suicidal thoughts in young people — monitor mood
  • can cause seizures — risk rises with dose
  • not with seizure disorders, bulimia or anorexia
  • can raise blood pressure — checks recommended

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants — must not be combined (14-day gap)
  • drugs broken down by CYP2D6 (some antidepressants, antipsychotics, beta blockers)
  • CYP2B6 inducers (e.g. carbamazepine, phenytoin, ritonavir)
  • digoxin — levels may fall
  • levodopa and amantadine — CNS side effects
  • drugs that lower the seizure threshold — caution

Pregnancy: not linked to birth defects overall — discuss with your doctor
