Cautions
- can increase suicidal thoughts in young people — monitor mood
- can cause seizures — risk rises with dose
- not with seizure disorders, bulimia or anorexia
- can raise blood pressure — checks recommended
Interactions
- MAOI antidepressants — must not be combined (14-day gap)
- drugs broken down by CYP2D6 (some antidepressants, antipsychotics, beta blockers)
- CYP2B6 inducers (e.g. carbamazepine, phenytoin, ritonavir)
- digoxin — levels may fall
- levodopa and amantadine — CNS side effects
- drugs that lower the seizure threshold — caution
Pregnancy: not linked to birth defects overall — discuss with your doctor
